Fixing a refund miscounted as a contribution

Got refunded for something you paid with your HSA? Here's how to keep it from counting as a new contribution

When this happens

You paid for something with your HSA, and the merchant or provider later sent you money back. Maybe an insurance claim covered part of the cost after the fact, or you returned an item you'd bought with HSA funds.

Why it matters

If that refunded money is treated as a standard deposit, it counts toward your annual contribution limit, even though it isn't new savings, it's money you already had. What you do next depends on where the refund landed.

How to fix it

If the refund went to your HSA card

  • Select the transaction under Transactions

  • Recategorize it as a Reimbursement Correction

  • Enter the amount

  • Enter the rest of the required details and submit

If the refund went to a personal payment method (not your HSA card)

You'll need to deposit the funds into your HSA yourself, and select the right category as you do:

  • Select Deposit

  • Recategorize the deposit as a Reimbursement Correction

  • Enter the amount

  • Enter the rest of the required details and submit
