HSA investment FAQ

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about HSA investing.

I'm new to investing. Any advice?

Unfortunately, we can't provide specific investment advice. We recommend researching your options or consulting with a financial advisor.

Is there a minimum to invest?

There's no minimum amount required for a single investment purchase. However, you'll need to maintain your plan's investment threshold in your cash balance to open an investment account and to continue to invest.

Investment thresholds are set by administrators and vary by HSA program. You can check your investment threshold by navigating to your Profile under Investment Settings.

Are there investment fees?

Investment accounts are charged a monthly fee based on balance:

  • Below $5,000: $1 per month

  • $5,000 or more: 0.01% of the balance per month

Whether you're responsible for these fees depends on your plan. Contact your administrator to confirm how this works for you.

.

Do I have to invest my entire HSA balance?

No, you're not required to invest your entire HSA balance. You can choose how much you'd like to invest.

Can I still use my HSA while the funds are invested?

Yes, your cash balance remains available for qualified expenses even while other funds are invested. If you want to spend money that's currently invested, you'll need to sell those investments first, funds typically take up to three business days to move into your cash balance. (See "Understand HSA cash and investment balances" for details.)

How do I deactivate my investment account?

You can deactivate your investment account once you've sold all your investments. To close your account, select Profile, then Investments, then Deactivate My Account. (See "Deactivate your HSA investment account" for the full steps.)

When can I invest?

Regular market trading hours are weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (ET), except on stock market holidays.
